When I joined the social impact sector two years ago, I was an analyst with very minimal experience and exposure to the dynamics of a working environment. I began working across the different corporate volunteering programs at Social Lens and very quickly realised the importance of project and stakeholder management – both of which I consider to be extremely crucial skills in today’s professional landscape.
Amid the complexities of working with and witnessing work with corporate clients, volunteers, nonprofits, community members, and program teams, I discovered three elements that have transformed my communication and allowed me to foster meaningful relationships with my stakeholders: kindness, empathy and active listening.
In my experience, demonstrating kindness has proven to be a game changer. It creates an atmosphere of trust, where everyone feels comfortable, sharing their thoughts and ideas. This sense of trust positively impacts team productivity and engagement. Kindness also forms the foundation for collaboration and fosters a supportive team culture.
Empathy is at the heart of effective communication in our sector and it helps us realise that understanding the perspectives and experiences of others is paramount. By putting ourselves in the shoes of our stakeholders, we can gain valuable insights into their challenges, needs, and aspirations. Embracing empathy allows us to tailor our messages and initiatives to resonate deeply with those we serve, leading to truly impactful solutions.
I recently came across an article which spoke about “WAIT” as a tool for practising active listening. “Why am I talking?” is an important question that can allow us to truly listen to what our peers are saying and being present and attentive. It also involves setting aside judgement and responding thoughtfully. Active listening is a valuable skill that nurtures genuine connections and understanding.
As we continue our mission to make a positive impact, it is important to take a step back and focus on the power of effective communication. Embracing kindness, empathy, and active listening elevates our connections with others and drives us to build bridges, empower communities, and create a more compassionate world for all.
